Earthquake Swarm Recorded by an Ocean Bottom Seismic Array in Southwest Offshore of Taiwan in October, 2005

چکیده
We conduct a detailed analysis of the seismic records for 406 marine earthquakes in SW offshore of Taiwan recorded by a small OBS array during 7 12 October 2005. The spatial distribution of the events, which included a complete main shock-aftershock sequence, show concentration in a vertical chain reaching 40 km in depth and that the deeper events slightly turns to the NE toward the Taiwan island. We use these recorded data to construct a 1-D layered velocity model for the local lithosphere. The model puts the Moho at around 13 km in depth and plate seismogenic thickness at about 40 km for the studied area. Our observations reveal that the local seismogenic structure is consistent with the character of the oceanic-origin crust and a non-subducting related mechanism. We also examine the polarizations of P-, Swave first arrivals and P-to-SV ratios in the waveform to obtain focal mechanism solutions for a total of 26 events. However, their solutions particularly show a non-unique deforming comportment for the strain releases, implying a strain rebound corresponding to the back-and-forth motion and also affected by the complexity of the pre-existing structure in the region.

Seismic Behavior of Jacket Offshore Platform Subjected to Near and Far Field Ground Motions
Offshore structures such as jacket platforms have to inevitably be designed against sever environmental actions. In seismically active areas these structures also become susceptible to earthquake excitations. Strong ground motions recorded in recent earthquakes, including the 1995 Kobe, Japan, 1999 Chi-chi, Taiwan and 1999 Kocaeli, Turkey earthquakes, revealed that the dynamic motions in nea...

[1] Seismic data recorded by ocean bottom seismometers (OBSs) at the southern East Pacific Rise (SEPR) were analyzed to characterize seismicity at fast spreading mid-ocean ridges. An automated event detection algorithm based on pattern recognition was developed to identify earthquake-generated T phases. The waveform cross-correlation and least squares method was found to provide more robust est...
متن کاملEarthquake Probabilities and Energy Characteristics of Seismicity Offshore Southwest Taiwan
We characterize fault geometries for moderate and large earthquakes in and offshore southwest (SW) Taiwan. Stress orientation estimates suggest that the first shock of the Pingtung earthquake may be characterized by slab flexure. A region of predominately normal-faulting earthquakes is also defined. Using the maximum-likelihood Gutenberg-Richter relation, we find that the repeat times for magni...

[1] In a four and a half hour period, more than 60 events in an earthquake swarm on the western boundary of the Easter microplate were detected by an array of ocean bottom seismometers. The larger events of the swarm were strikeslip earthquakes located on two transform faults separated by about 25 km. Slip on the faults was closely coupled, with activity alternating back and forth randomly betw...
متن کاملEffect of earthquake directional uncertainty on the seismic response of jacket-type offshore platform
In the seismic risk assessment of structures, two main random variables are involved, namely the vulnerability of the structure and the seismic action. The aim of the study presented here is to analyze the seismic behavior of the jacket-type offshore platforms as an expensive and vital structure. Furthermore, the influence of the incidence angle of the seismic action is also investigated by usi...
